Women Values

#7
In the age of Enlightenment, people's fresh ideas were spreading all around the world. Before that period of time, men thought that women should stay home and do the job a wife should do. In addition, women's novels were valueless at that moment. Since the Enlightenment ocurred, women's values were being more influenced. Mary Shelley, the author of "Frankenstein", has used her right to publish her opinions. The way she writes and expressing her idea is amazing because her thoughts has taught our future generation many new stuff. From her articles, people can see that women also are able to do whatever men can do. From this article, she tells us that people should have responsibility to take care the things they have done.

In accordance with the cultural values of the Enlightenment, human thought and behavior dominated by the kind of thinking should be rational rather than emotional, enigmatic or blind superstition. It also should be secular. In other words, should not be disseminated to any supernatural motivation. It is derived from the Gothic horror fiction story of a mad scientist describe a class of fiction. The first one, is Mary Shelley published in 1818 Frankenstein. Gothic horror novels follow the routine, these novel anti-Enlightenment, from the kind of emotional urgency to mine material, moral stories compiled them, under the guise of science to reveal the origin of evil, and how to resist the kind of sin. These novels to illustrate the scientific rationalism for a person's mental health is harmful. Meanwhile, those who hold the secret knowledge of modern secular scientists, according to traditional moral standards, are incomprehensible freak. In addition, these novels also remind the reader that secular science must conform to traditional Christian values of Jewish ethical guidelines.

"Frankenstein" as the founder of science fiction, beyond the ordinary with the profound significance of science fiction. Height of the crisis in modern British Enlightenment to the French Revolution as an advocate of rational context, indeed gave rise to practical benefits, but the reason they can not solve all problems. But this can not replace religion or faith can give people the ultimate goal of bringing mind and comfort. The anti-all itself, or spiritual experience from the inside to find the meaning of life. This respect with the then generally accepted in the Christian West, affect. Therefore, in the belief in the vacuum of modern society , this "Frankenstein" gave us a generalization of the religion into a religious perspective, that the return on the faith and heart of people today can still bring a little enlightenment.

Learn from failure

#6
People always gain experiences from failure. In 17th century, scientists improve their invention through their fresh ideas which is discovered from the bad aspects of old invention. Scientisis keep updating their stuff because they know things will being eliminated if they stay in the old style. In the "Frankenstein", if Dr. Frankenstein does not give up his creature, he must fix the bad aspect of the creature he made. If he can make it better, everythings will turn out easily and simply. People should correct the failure to make things getting close to perfect. Only the improvement can keep things longer and being perfect.

Declaration of Slavery

#5
During the age of slavery, black people have no value in the society. They are working so hard everyday and even dont have a better rest. Some masters treat them badly like smacking them when they dont do their job well. Through the appearance of Enlightenment, the slavery had been abolished. In the story of Frankenstein, Dr. Frankenstein should treat the creature equally as human. The Creature is symbolizing the slave because Dr. Frankenstein abandon him and want to destroy him. The creature just want to live in a family like everybody has, he can do what human can do, such as going to school, playing with friends, and having happiness...etc

The Symbol of Evil

#4
“What could not be expected in the country of eternal light?” asks Walton, displaying a faith in, and optimism about, science. In Frankenstein, light symbolizes knowledge, discovery, and enlightenment. The natural world is a place of dark secrets, hidden passages, and unknown mechanisms; the goal of the scientist is then to reach light. The dangerous and more powerful cousin of light is fire. The monster’s first experience with a still-smoldering flame reveals the dual nature of fire: he discovers excitedly that it creates light in the darkness of the night, but also that it harms him when he touches it. I think fire also symbols the evil mind in monster's deeply spirit because his experiences. He learns what feeling is, he understands Dr. Frankenstein abandon him and feels hateful.

Expressed on the story " Frankenstein" of science and technology concerns the introduction of a human society. Technology to human society and human itself felt overwhelmed. Monster, in a sense are being developed and represent infiltrated human society, science and technology. We can see the full expression of anxiety at work, gloomy mood throughout the book, and cast them into the text. Works such as the four storms, it indicates that changes to come. After reading the whole work, we will find that the writer has a very tense, restless mood.
Renaissance is the slogan of the liberation of human desire God created man according to the myth of the faith. According to the myth of the Enlightenment version of this explanation, since man is created by God, was their belief in Marxism who attributed evil desires actually created by God. Therefore, if a person to go to satisfy their desires, and should have not contrary to God's teachings, and even that is in line with the purpose of when God created man.

The freature of the book " Frankenstein" is a creative to the traditional Gothic literary sentimentalism. Gothic novels popular in the 18th century, more than the contents of a terrorist, violence, supernatural and yearning for life in the Middle Ages, because of circumstances over the dark and desolate place in the Gothic castle (18th century England, a popular form of the structure similar to the church) in its name; story full of suspense, in order to destroy the outcome; there are many similar well-known works. Sentimentalism refers to the industrial revolution, before the French Revolution as a literary genre, the main features of a writer to feelings instead of reason and humanity as a critical tool, mainly praise kindness, compassion, selfless, and in line with nature, but the shape of the figure Some pedantic and naive.
The Enlightenment is often accommodate a certain way of thinking of conviction or the content, the Enlightenment thinkers tend to retain faith in God, we of the "Historical Materialism" tutorial is a "bourgeois (or the public class) of the compromise and weakness "to explain. That is, according to this view, we do can only say that the majority of Enlightenment thinkers still maintain a degree of ignorance; heart retained a certain degree of darkness. This interpretation is not only hard to convince, and will understand the concepts of the Enlightenment in the wrong direction.

The idea of John Locke

#3
Novel takes as its subject human psychology and cognition; it is undoubtedly the first European work on human cognition. John Locke was a philosopher of human science in 17th century. Locke appied the new science to explaining the human mind itsel and all its operation; he started with a radical deinition o human mind. He wrote two far-reaching and massively inluential works on human sciences, An Essay Concerning Human Understanding(1690) and Two Treatises on Govement (1690). He thought the human mind enters the world with no pre-fromed ideas whatsoever. the human mind at the birth is a blank, a erased board. Human sensation: taste, touch, smell, hearing, and especially vision filled the empty mind with object of sensation. From these sensation, human eventually derive a sense of order and rationality. i argree with this idea because Dr. Frankenstein create a monster who is more human and kind just like what Locke is talking about. The creature has no family after he born because Dr. Frankenstein abandon him. No one is going to teach him what sensation are. He needs to learn by himself and experiences these things that he never has.

Science of Frankenstein

#2

When I read about “Frankenstein” I only had one word came up in my mine. It was immoral. Why did I think it is immoral? I thought that human nature was always from life to death, never reversed from death being alive. That couldn’t be happened in real life and it would destroy the rule of human. Otherwise, he created a new life which meant it was possible to create a new life or a replication of human. In science, it had the method to make a DNA replication. During the period of Enlightenment, Friendrich Miescher was the first person who discovered the way of DNA replication in 1869. Also he got a new ideas to copy a human with DNA after he experienced The Enlightenment. The process was “replication” in that each strand of the original double-stranded DNA molecules serves as template for the reproduction of the complementary strand. This suggest anything that you think it is impossible is can be happened in science.

The Enlightenment and Frankenstein

#1

The Enlightenment is about the period between 17th century and 18th century in European, the people believed human knowledge and defied the tradition and the pre-established thoughts of the past. Mary Shelley was born in 1797 and she experienced the period during the mind of tradition became to open mind. Also she used the brand new idea to write about Dr. Frankenstein created a creature. Frankenstein is related to The Enlightenment because no one tried to write a book about created a human from death being alive. It was a novel with modern mind of Enlightenment.

Human nature

Entry 6 Hobbes, from England, wrote the Leviathan. He obeserved that people are generally bad.But in the book Frankenstein, Shelley didn't show this, she shows us that the monster is good at the first. He is just too sad that no one can accept him, because he is too ugly.

Rationalism

Entry 5
Rationalism - one idea of the Enlightenment, from the Latin ratio, meaning 'reason' - is a point of view that states that reason plays the main role in understanding the world and obtaining knowledge. However, this does not mean that they were uninterested in science and experiment – on the contrary, both rationalists and empiricists were keen on scientific enquiry. This was because they were reacting against centuries-old traditions which tried to base an understanding of the world upon ideas put forward by the 4th century BC Greek philosopher Aristotle and the world view of the Bible. Such an outlook was therefore based on tradition and authority, rather than reason and experiment.Rationalism thinks that experience is more important and have more effect of ue than knowledge. ."For this I had deprived myself of rest and health. I had desired it with an ardour that far exceeded moderation;but now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart."(172)I think Victor has lots of knowledge but he does not have enough experience about his experiment. He has no idea what may happen to create a new life in a laboratory

Women

Entry 4
The Enlightenment Philosopher Wollstonecraft said that women should have the right to an education and the right to vote; Equality should be extended to women as well as men. I do agree with her idea and I think if she didn't mention this, women may still be what they like before, no education, no right as men. In the book Frankenstein, a girl name Safie, her mom encorage her daughter to chase for freedom. "She instructed her daughter in the tenets of her religion and taught her to aspire to higher power of intllect and an independence of spirit forbidden to the female followers of Muhammad"(440) I do agree with Wollstonectaft and Safie's mom, they are the represent of women.

Enlightenment

Entry 3
Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-incurred immaturity. Immaturity is the inability to use one's own understanding without the guidance of another. This immaturity is self-incurred if its cause is not lack of understanding, but lack of resolution and courage to use it without the guidance of another. The motto of enlightenment is therefore: Sapere aude! Have courage to use your own understanding!
Dr. Frankenstein do have the knowledge and courage, but I guess his knowledge is not good enough and no one guide him. He even don't have a partner to discus about his experiment.

Philosophy of Enlightenment

Entry 2
The Two Fundamental Characteristics of the Philosophy of Enlightenment are: 1) faith in the European Reason and human rationality to reject the tradition and the pre-established institutions and thoughts; 2) Search for the practical, useful knowledge as the power to control nature. Dr. Frankenstein studies very hard and try to collect any information that he can get to approach his successful. This is just like the second characteristic of the Philosophy of Enlightenment. "I prepared myself for a multitude of reverses; my operations might be incessantly baffled, and at laast my work be imperfect, yet when I considered the improvement which every day takes place in science and mechanics, I was encouraged to hope my present attempts would at least lay the foundations of future success." (155)Victor does not worry about fail, he believes that he can do it.

Enlightenment&Frankenstein

Entry 1
The period of Enlightenment refers to the European culture of the 18th century. The People of Enlightenment believed the almightiness of human knowledge and defied the tradition and the pre-established thoughts of the past. Dr. Frankenstein believes that he can make dead people alive again, which on one will think about it."After days and nights of incredible labour and fatigue, I succeeded in discovering the cause of generation and life;nay, more, I became myself capable of bestowing animation upon lifeless matter." (150) this quote is related with the idea of Enlightenment, Victor thinks that his knowledge can do anything, even can create a life. Enlightenment is the period in which the humans became overconfident in the human Reason an rationality.

He (it) is a monster, even the names are not. But should not have a monster, because the Frankenstein created the creature he was too ugly. Originally the intelligent, understanding the human species because of its ugly contempt for humanity received, hate, this is no apparent cause of. Finally love to hate, has become a killing demons.
The purpose of Enlightenment is calling a rational reality disperse the darkness of the sun. Critical authoritarianism, clericalism, called the pursuit of political democracy, equal rights and individual freedom.
#2
At the beginning, the artificial monster has kindhearted nature. However, he feels very disappointed when he is always discriminated by people and his creator. This novel shows the author’s attitude towards life. She thinks people have double characters---goodness and badness. People are going to do wrong things if they are discriminated and persecuted by other people for a long time. What’s worse, they may destroy all the world.
In the Enlightenment, humanism is a philosophy and a worldview. Humanism, especially personal interests, values and dignity to make the starting point. So the meaning of Enlightenment, the tolerance between people, no violence, and freedom of thought among people with the most important principle.

In the era of the Enlightment movement, lots of new knowleges and ideas came out.And people thought that everything must have a scientific way to explain it.Things should be logos and morol. But the book Frankenstein didn't follow the idea of Enlightment. What the auther write can't find a science way to explain it and it didn't logos. When everybody follow the idea of Enlightment, Mary Shelley didn't, she used her own to creat her artifacts. She didn't effect by the Enlightment movement. So that's why her artifacts can be so special at that time.

When talking about enlightenment, we usually means the time during the 18th century.
the background in the 18th century.
In 18th century, the bourgeois revolution has ended. But there are some remains. So people stand up to strive to bring the revolution to an end by clearing away the feudal remnants and replace them with bourgeois ideology. This is the original purpose of English Enlightenment. After the industry revolution, the economic developed.
People had spare time to do more Social public activity. They went to pubs and clubs to discuss and share their life experience, current affairs, and even gossip. People had spare time to appreciate essays, poems and novels. So the literature developed quickly at this time.
The enlightenment movement started in France. The enlighteners believed that when reason served as the yardstick for the measurement of all human activities and relations. The movement swept through the whole Western Europe. Then it influenced Britain a lot.
So the home and abroad situation stimulates British literature.
And also, the purpose of Enlightenment was to enlighten the whole world with the modern philosophical and artistic ideas. The philosophy of the enlighteners, through rational and materialistic in its essence, include of sentiments as a means of perception and learning.
The last one, the enlighteners believed that human beings were limited, imperfect, and yet capable of rationality and perfection through education. So they advocated universal education.

British author Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" may be the earliest response to this drastic change one of the important literary works. The novel is considered a 'science fiction' of the originator, but also to ghosts, the paranormal theme of the 'Gothic novel' important representative.
In the novel, exploring the mysteries of life and how Doctor Victor Frankenstein a series of research and experiments, and successful use of non-living matter to create life. He has a humanoid body to create a "monster", after the birth of this monster made many terrible things and caused a series of disasters. The content of this novel has to invoke the eighteenth century life on the physiology, said, John Lock and David Hume and other empiricist philosophers philosophy advocated theory of mind, and mapping the anatomy of contemporary flourish and pathological anatomy.
At the turn century " a precognition upon the great enlightenment" of the danger the world was about to face on account of humanity being enslaved by the power of material civilization. people felt that something had to be done to save the world from becoming a Frankenstein's monster.
Book with a distinctive and dramatic way, showing any manipulation of natural science the deep anxiety, and above the traditional statement of the science of strong religious and moral concerns, but also contains the moral responsibility of scientists soul-searching.

Science od Frankenstein

In the other hand, I felt pain about the monster because he was crated and abandoned by Frankenstein. The monster just wanted love from Frankenstein and treated him like a normal people. Frankenstein never teaches him how to speak, how to write, what should do, what shouldn’t do. Frankenstein just wanted to kill him because he thought the creature had risk to people. Otherwise, Frankenstein didn’t know the creature was innocent as same as a child and the creature helped other people. Frankenstein shouldn’t treat him like this. He had responsibility to resolve what he had done.

After I finish the novel " Frankenstein" , I really think human shouldn't try to broke the nature rule. Victor shouldn't create a new life and then abandon him. Maybe the monster was very ugly and disgusting, but this was what Victor created. Science itself is not a bad thing, but Victor should have a responsibility to what he created. Victor was so into his own business and his lab. He forget his family. His father even bag him to write a letter to them, they want to know how is his life, good or bad. Have passion with you job and do something you like is not a bad thing, but you should not forget who you are and you should not forget those people around you.
Victor paid to what he did to the monster. If he can predict this, will he create him? He won't. But we can not predict about what may happen in the future of our life. What we can do now is do our best, so when we look back of our life, we will not regret about what we did. People alway regret about their past about what they did in the past. But there is no way we can go back and change it. So before you do something, think about it carefully. It is right thing to do or wrong thing. No one is perfect, everybody made mistake. So if you did something wrong, don't blame yourself. Remember it, next time make the right decision and do the right thing. This is the way how we grow up and this is the way how we learn. Victor is too crazy and I know he does not want to hurt anyone. Our life have some people like Victor, when they doing some thing, they do not mean to hurt anyone, but the thing they are doing is already hurting people around them. We should not think one thing only on our point of view, we also should think about how other people's feel. If Victor ever think about those question, he will not be so impertinence.
I think this novel is not just a novel, it can also teach us lots of things that we should think about. There are so many issues in the book "Frankenstein", like love, family, friends and responsibility. I think all those issues are what happened in our life everyday.
The most important thing I learn form the novel is you should know what is responsibility and you should have the responsiblity to everything you do.
Switzerland nobility Frankenstein, had studied in Germany. He studied the electrochemical of life and found the secret of death ,so he decided to proceed with manufacture of life. He created an 8-foot monster, but he was shock of the monster ugly surface, Frankenstein was scared fainted. The monster had been missing was found until Frankenstein woke up.Monster has just been born love this world so much, he was hiding in the mountains and learned to use fire and encountering the hermit in the mountains. Monster help blind grandfather get firewood when the young men and women go outside . And he steal a book from the school of Arabic and French and other languages, read a lot of classic literature and philosophy, began to desire and love the arts.
But the world not looks so perfect that the imagination he want . Many people see him will be cursed, and he often suffer from everyone's disgust and fear. From that time, the shadow began shrouded of Frankenstein . He Encountered a Frankenstein's brother William, he was so young, and he do not know how to fears, and his friends. But William afraid of monsters. He refused to make friends with monster. And told monster that his brother is Doctor Frankenstein. This provoked a monster thirst for revenge. He killed William. Monster walked in the house and found Frankenstein family maid Justin was sleeping. he hated the beauty of Justin and he placed William's necklace on Justin body. Justin was arrested cause suspect of killing William. Doctor Frankenstein came back and he realize of those happen was monster did. At beginning he did not worry about the trial of Justin, but Justin trial very negative. Justin judge ultimately sentenced to death.Doctor Frankenstein have seen herself as pro-sister of Justin was execution to dead , he remorse himself produce a monster as weapons to kill two of his most closed family member. So Doctor Frankenstein began trace the monster.
