Human nature

Entry 6 Hobbes, from England, wrote the Leviathan. He obeserved that people are generally bad.But in the book Frankenstein, Shelley didn't show this, she shows us that the monster is good at the first. He is just too sad that no one can accept him, because he is too ugly.

Rationalism

Entry 5
Rationalism - one idea of the Enlightenment, from the Latin ratio, meaning 'reason' - is a point of view that states that reason plays the main role in understanding the world and obtaining knowledge. However, this does not mean that they were uninterested in science and experiment – on the contrary, both rationalists and empiricists were keen on scientific enquiry. This was because they were reacting against centuries-old traditions which tried to base an understanding of the world upon ideas put forward by the 4th century BC Greek philosopher Aristotle and the world view of the Bible. Such an outlook was therefore based on tradition and authority, rather than reason and experiment.Rationalism thinks that experience is more important and have more effect of ue than knowledge. ."For this I had deprived myself of rest and health. I had desired it with an ardour that far exceeded moderation;but now that I had finished, the beauty of the dream vanished, and breathless horror and disgust filled my heart."(172)I think Victor has lots of knowledge but he does not have enough experience about his experiment. He has no idea what may happen to create a new life in a laboratory

Women

Entry 4
The Enlightenment Philosopher Wollstonecraft said that women should have the right to an education and the right to vote; Equality should be extended to women as well as men. I do agree with her idea and I think if she didn't mention this, women may still be what they like before, no education, no right as men. In the book Frankenstein, a girl name Safie, her mom encorage her daughter to chase for freedom. "She instructed her daughter in the tenets of her religion and taught her to aspire to higher power of intllect and an independence of spirit forbidden to the female followers of Muhammad"(440) I do agree with Wollstonectaft and Safie's mom, they are the represent of women.

Enlightenment

Entry 3
Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-incurred immaturity. Immaturity is the inability to use one's own understanding without the guidance of another. This immaturity is self-incurred if its cause is not lack of understanding, but lack of resolution and courage to use it without the guidance of another. The motto of enlightenment is therefore: Sapere aude! Have courage to use your own understanding!
Dr. Frankenstein do have the knowledge and courage, but I guess his knowledge is not good enough and no one guide him. He even don't have a partner to discus about his experiment.

Philosophy of Enlightenment

Entry 2
The Two Fundamental Characteristics of the Philosophy of Enlightenment are: 1) faith in the European Reason and human rationality to reject the tradition and the pre-established institutions and thoughts; 2) Search for the practical, useful knowledge as the power to control nature. Dr. Frankenstein studies very hard and try to collect any information that he can get to approach his successful. This is just like the second characteristic of the Philosophy of Enlightenment. "I prepared myself for a multitude of reverses; my operations might be incessantly baffled, and at laast my work be imperfect, yet when I considered the improvement which every day takes place in science and mechanics, I was encouraged to hope my present attempts would at least lay the foundations of future success." (155)Victor does not worry about fail, he believes that he can do it.

Enlightenment&Frankenstein

Entry 1
The period of Enlightenment refers to the European culture of the 18th century. The People of Enlightenment believed the almightiness of human knowledge and defied the tradition and the pre-established thoughts of the past. Dr. Frankenstein believes that he can make dead people alive again, which on one will think about it."After days and nights of incredible labour and fatigue, I succeeded in discovering the cause of generation and life;nay, more, I became myself capable of bestowing animation upon lifeless matter." (150) this quote is related with the idea of Enlightenment, Victor thinks that his knowledge can do anything, even can create a life. Enlightenment is the period in which the humans became overconfident in the human Reason an rationality.

He (it) is a monster, even the names are not. But should not have a monster, because the Frankenstein created the creature he was too ugly. Originally the intelligent, understanding the human species because of its ugly contempt for humanity received, hate, this is no apparent cause of. Finally love to hate, has become a killing demons.
The purpose of Enlightenment is calling a rational reality disperse the darkness of the sun. Critical authoritarianism, clericalism, called the pursuit of political democracy, equal rights and individual freedom.
#2
At the beginning, the artificial monster has kindhearted nature. However, he feels very disappointed when he is always discriminated by people and his creator. This novel shows the author’s attitude towards life. She thinks people have double characters---goodness and badness. People are going to do wrong things if they are discriminated and persecuted by other people for a long time. What’s worse, they may destroy all the world.
In the Enlightenment, humanism is a philosophy and a worldview. Humanism, especially personal interests, values and dignity to make the starting point. So the meaning of Enlightenment, the tolerance between people, no violence, and freedom of thought among people with the most important principle.

In the era of the Enlightment movement, lots of new knowleges and ideas came out.And people thought that everything must have a scientific way to explain it.Things should be logos and morol. But the book Frankenstein didn't follow the idea of Enlightment. What the auther write can't find a science way to explain it and it didn't logos. When everybody follow the idea of Enlightment, Mary Shelley didn't, she used her own to creat her artifacts. She didn't effect by the Enlightment movement. So that's why her artifacts can be so special at that time.

When talking about enlightenment, we usually means the time during the 18th century.

In 18th century, the bourgeois revolution has ended. But there are some remains. So people stand up to strive to bring the revolution to an end by clearing away the feudal remnants and replace them with bourgeois ideology. This is the original purpose of English Enlightenment. After the industry revolution, the economic developed.
People had spare time to do more Social public activity. They went to pubs and clubs to discuss and share their life experience, current affairs, and even gossip. People had spare time to appreciate essays, poems and novels. So the literature developed quickly at this time.
The enlightenment movement started in France. The enlighteners believed that when reason served as the yardstick for the measurement of all human activities and relations. The movement swept through the whole Western Europe. Then it influenced Britain a lot.
So the home and abroad situation stimulates British literature.
And also, the purpose of Enlightenment was to enlighten the whole world with the modern philosophical and artistic ideas. The philosophy of the enlighteners, through rational and materialistic in its essence, include of sentiments as a means of perception and learning.
The last one, the enlighteners believed that human beings were limited, imperfect, and yet capable of rationality and perfection through education. So they advocated universal education.

British author Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" may be the earliest response to this drastic change one of the important literary works. The novel is considered a 'science fiction' of the originator, but also to ghosts, the paranormal theme of the 'Gothic novel' important representative.
In the novel, exploring the mysteries of life and how Doctor Victor Frankenstein a series of research and experiments, and successful use of non-living matter to create life.
